Every year, just like in the garment industry, we are introduced to the new “fashion” and design ideas for the home. These include trends, hot new items and lifestyle changes for the home that lead to a variety of new features being marketed for the home.

This year, the most important look for the home is call Transitional, which is a blend of contemporary and traditional.  This tends to be an eclectic combination for the kitchen which includes hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and tile backsplashes. These 3 features continue as important trends for the kitchen with variations on use. For example, although stainless appliances are still strong for the home, some homeowners are combining the appliances into the cabinetry for an integral look. Tile for the backsplash is still being featured serving as an area to add a splash of color to the room. Keep in mind that nothing can date a kitchen more than an outdated backsplash!

Kitchen islands are an important feature for the home, but not unless there is adequate room for one. Countertops are trending from the every popular granite to quartz products like Caesarstone, since they resist scratches and stains. Many families are changing their appliances out for more energy efficient ones, rated by Energystar. In addition, the newest stoves and ranges are a more professional-grade look, like a chef’s stove and double ovens in the wall are also important in kitchens in 2014.

Cabinets in the new year range in color from whites to off-whites since customers want a light and airy feel to the kitchen.  Wall colors that are important for this year are shades of gray, with a splash of color.
