There are currently 3 programs across the nation that offer a third party certification for energy efficiency.

Included in this threesome are:

  1. Energy Star rated homes are considered 20-30% more energy efficient than a traditionally built home. There are energy saving features that are required which include more effective insulation, tighter construction practices , higher performing windows and more efficient heating and air conditioning.   2. National Green Building Standard is number two. These homes set certifications required for site development, indoor environment, homeowner education, and resource, energy and water. Visit www.nahbgreen.org.
  3. LEED for Homes is a rating system with standards for a variety of categories, including the material built into a home, air quality, location and water efficiency. A LEED-certified home uses 20-30% less energy than a home built  to the 2006 International Conservation Code. Go to www.usgbc.org for additional information.
